Admiral François Darlan
1881–1942 • French naval officer and controversial wartime political figure
François Darlan was born in Nérac on 7 August 1881 and rose through the French Navy to become Admiral of the Fleet. His wartime career remains deeply controversial, particularly because of his role in the Vichy regime and his later negotiations with the Allies in North Africa.
A complicated legacy
Darlan’s life cannot be reduced to a simple portrait of hero or traitor. His decisions during the Second World War placed him at the centre of some of the most difficult political and moral questions facing France.
